I spent more than a few years totally intrigued by the Carousel Horse. I became aware of their beauty, not as a child, but as an adult. One hot summer’s eve in 1974 I was working at a new Amusement Park in Jackson, NJ called Great Adventure. I was hired to work in their food service department, and was offered a chance to make some extra money during the evenings. Seems they needed a set of eyes to watch for thieves in the night, during construction of the park. One night I was asked to watch over the Yum Yum Palace, which was to be an Ice Cream Parlor adjacent to the Carousel. That night I watched while they assembled the Savage Galloper Carousel at the center of the park. It became aware to me that evening, that the Carousel was more than just an amusement, it was a work of art, manufactured by skilled artisans and carvers. I had no idea that over 10 years later I would be following in the footsteps of these skilled carvers, carving my own line of Carousel Rocking Horses. I’ve moved on to other things now, but still enjoy teaching people how to carve their own creations at The American Woodcarving School.
